Spark: Igniting social enterprise to prevent homelessness

BUILDING SKILLS: Teaching entrepreneurial skills in your communityHomelessness is an old problem and traditional charity support can be unsustainable with little emphasis on the reasons people become homeless, such as unemployment, family or relationship breakdowns, illness and, debt, nor on a model for their return to independent living.

Using the power of business, Spark aims to encourage a new way of thinking so that organisations operating in the homelessness sector are sustainable, no longer dependent on sporadic funding and can make a real difference in preventing and tackling homelessness.

The social enterprises that come from Spark will create employment, training, housing opportunities, wealth and, above all, a future for homeless people all over England.

What is social enterprise?

Social enterprises are profit-making organisations which reinvest the majority of their profits for the benefit of their community to tackle social and environmental problems. The model offers a real and lasting solution to major societal problems such as homelessness while at the same time generating trading income for local communities. This ensures that social enterprises gain freedom from grant dependency, and greater control in the delivery of their services.
