Insight/Case study - beneficiaries
Z. (Birmingham)
I sold the magazine and in the early days of The Big Issue’s existence in the West Midlands, I helped out on a voluntary capacity at the distribution point.
A number of crises in my life meant that I couldn’t cope and I became involved in drug use in order to blank out my problems. Before too long I was a dependent heroin user.
This was six years ago. The Big Issue business and Foundation staff continued to support me throughout this time until I was able to take the first tentative steps towards rehabilitation. The Foundation encouraged me to access drugs services in the city. They assisted me in maintaining my tenancy with a local Housing Association, which was on the brink of collapse, and continued my access to free veterinary care for my beloved dog via a National Canine Defence League Scheme.
Today, I am no longer reliant on heroin. I have two dogs and recently adopted a stray kitten. They are my family and I love them dearly. I have resumed a previous interest in the art of tapestry and am considering pursuing a City and Guilds course in the subject. I am no longer reliant on selling The Big Issue magazine and only occasionally need to access Foundation services. My life has completely turned around.
